While our 2023 Calendar is open for bookings, the weekends through June remain blocked to allow for larger Group Bookings and HOSTEL TAKEOVERS. Weekends will be open for booking by Mid- February :)
Welcome to Black Elephant Hostel! We are proud to be the first hostel to open in Portland, Maine! We truly believe in affordable travel and LOVE the social environment that hostels create. It is not just where you travel to - but who you meet along the way and the experiences you have together. We strive to provide a comfortable and creative living space for all travelers, young and old.
Our goal at The Black Elephant is to create an open minded and safe space with those who choose to explore the world around them and, ultimately, to inspire a global sense of community.

Our Rooms
We offer a communal kitchen and funky lobby that are shared by all guests. The hostel sleeps just about 60 people. Our rooms are in the following configurations:
5 Dorms
one of which is Female Only and one of which is ADA complaint
The following Private Rooms
2 Triples w/ Twin Over Full bunk
3 Doubles - 2 with Full Beds one with a Twin Bunk
Private with two bunks sleeping 4
Private with 2 full sized bunk beds - ADA Compliant - sleeping up to 8
2 Full Studios
